Fire Notice
Lake City, Hinsdale County July 1, 2026 — For the safety of firefighters and the public, the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison (GMUG) National Forests’ Ouray Ranger District has implemented a fire closure area in the vicinity of the Gold Mountain Fire. This area of the closure includes the northwest corner of Hinsdale County.
The closure area applies to all National Forest System lands in Hinsdale County east of Ouray County and south Of Gunnison County, and east of Uncompahgre peak and north of Matterhorn Peak. The approximated closure area is within the circle on the enclosed map. In response to the closure, Hinsdale County will close the upper portions of CR 24 (North Henson) that access trailheads to Matterhorn and Wetterhorn Peaks in addition to at least five other trails in the area. Many of the trails accessed from North Henson lead directly into the closure area. Hinsdale County Sheriff Office and Search and Rescue are checking trailheads in the area to inform campers and hikers. Uncompahgre Peak is still accessible from the Trailhead up Nellie Creek Road. The forest closure is to the immediate west of the peak.
